THE mother-and-daughter scene in the Mamma Mia! musical where the duo sing the Abba hit Slipping through the Fingers held a meaningful place in the hearts of Lim Ah Bah, 59, and Hoong Yee Wan, 60.

The couple related the scene to their own experience of giving their daughter Gina Lim, 31, away on her wedding day a few years ago.

“It truly captured how we felt about giving away our daughter – it was quite emotional, really, for both of us.

“Gina is in Australia now, but I hope that one day, she will also get a chance to see this excellent musical,” Lim said after the show on Thursday, which was hosted by SP Setia.

The second day of the Mamma Mia! show was dedicated to all of SP Setia’s business partners, corporate clients and customers. The guests of honour were Yang di Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and his consort Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah. The royal couple also brought with them their daughter Tengku Fatimatuz Zahra.

SP Setia group managing director and chief executive officer Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin and his wife Puan Sri Teng Teng Liew played host to all the guests.

Meanwhile, the Lai family also enjoyed the show and felt that people of all ages could relate to it.

Winston Lai, 49, said the story-line was fantastic, as it brought out the message of love, which was a universal subject.

“Eventually, one’s true love will persist and stay on, like in the case of Donna … the man she loved came back after many years,” said Lai, who watched the show with his wife Yvonne, 47, and son Daniel, nine.

Teenagers Alia Syakira, Aminah Ibrahim and Sher May Soon, all 14, proved that age was no barrier to enjoying a show like Mamma Mia!

“The songs are evergreen and the dancing was really great!” said Aminah.

Added Alia, “They performed all the songs with such conviction. We were all dancing and singing along.”

For Quintin Tan and his friend Chan Chew Fung, the musical was a throwback to their youth.

“These are songs from our era … it’s the music I grew up to. I was dancing along … and that’s why I am sweating so much now,” Tan said after the performance.
