THE Women Parliamentary Caucus had its first meeting and decided that they will rope male MPs into the group.

“At the meeting, we decided to invite men to join the caucus. We will be forming another committee called the Gender Equality Committee and will invite them to join,” said caucus chairman Nancy Shukri.

The caucus, made up of MPs from all political parties, was established to empower women on gender issues, she said at the Parliament lobby.

Besides the decision to get men to join the caucus, the other main issues discussed were on 30% participation of women in decision-making positions in society and sexual harassment.

Asked if the caucus was formed following the fact Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Datuk Rafiah Salim’s contract was not renewed, Nancy said no.

“The caucus was formed on July 17 and it is formalised today,” she said.

However, she said the group took note of the Rafiah case.

Nancy said before the caucus was formed, there was a workshop by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry that came up with a draft action plan for increasing women’s participation in decision-making positions by 30%. The caucus then discussed how to initiate it.

Among the actions included meeting the Human Resources Ministry to help ensure the target was carried out.

There are 23 women MPs in the caucus. Male MPs have expressed interest in joining it, said caucus deputy chairman Chong Eng.
